The tree science and conservation society of South Africa

The Dendrological Society promotes the study, protection and propagation of trees and tree-dominated ecosystems as a contribution to effective environmental conservation and improvement in South Africa. Membership of the Dendrological Society is open to all natural persons whose application is seconded by two members and endorsed by the Executive Committee.

  • Biodiversity Hotspots:
    Conservation International's informative review of the most threatened areas of plant and animal life on earth. No less than four Hotspots are found in southern Africa. 
  • Terrestrial Eco-regions of the World:
    World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) initiative to demarcate and describe 867 eco-regions; the latter being geographically distinct areas of land that is characterized by a distinctive climate, ecological features, and plant and animal communities. 
  • UNEP-WCMC Database of Rare Trees:
    A searchable database containing information of threatened trees and other trees of conservation concern. Data contributes to the Global Trees Campaign. 
  • World Heritage Convention:
    The mission of this Convention is to define and conserve the world's heritage, by drawing up a list of sites whose outstanding values should be preserved for all humanity and to ensure their protection through a closer co-operation among nations.

Timber plantations "Plantations are not forests" 

  • Timberwatch Coalition:
    Coalition of organizations concerned about the negative biological and sociological impacts of commercial timber plantations in southern Africa. 
  • World Rainforest Movement:
    International body promoting the conservation of natural forests but opposing the large scale destructive expansion of commercial timber plantations, especially in developing countries.
